1/3/08 PLANNING COMMISSION DEFERRAL OF CAROLINA STATION APPROVAL

Tuesday, January 8th, 2008

Horry County P.R.I.D.E. Report
Planning Commission Action 1/3/08
Carolina Station

1/3/08 ACTION
The Planning Commission voted unanimously January 3 to defer action until February 7 on the Carolina Station development plan and rezoning request. The Commissioners want to see a completed development plan (including a storm water study), the results of the traffic study, and the possible return of the solid waste facility to the center of the development before considering further action.

COMMENT
The Planning Commission is to be COMMENDED for their unanimous decision to defer action on the Carolina Station development due to incomplete information. Commissioners Graham, Riley, Todd, Hucks, and Buffum stated they could not support an incomplete plan and requested further information.

1/6/08 ACTION ALERT! ASPHALT PLANT ONE STEP CLOSER

Tuesday, January 8th, 2008

DHEC approved a storm water permit last week for the 701 asphalt facility. Below is an email Horry County P.R.I.D.E. sent to state officials requesting assistance.

The Honorable Ray Cleary
Representative Nelson Hardwick

Horry County P.R.I.D.E. is strongly opposed to the placement of a toxic asphalt plant in a residential area at Route 701 and Mt. Pisgah Cemetery Road.

Although this is a County decision, both the State and the County have a responsibility to protect its citizens. The Horry County Council approved an asphalt plant in a residential area knowing that DHEC does NOT have the ability to monitor toxic chemicals in the air or the ground water. Their regulations haven’t been updated in almost 30 years, and many nearby residents rely on well water.

We urgently request your assistance in stopping the issuance of further DHEC permits. Horry County cannot afford to risk another AVX.
