CAROLINA STATION RESULTS!

Thursday, July 3rd, 2008

What happened at the July 1, 2008 Council meeting on Carolina Station…

Carolina Station gained final approval from County Council members by a vote of 6-5. Disappointing…but not discouraging. 6-5 is a far cry from the overwhelming approval developers are used to getting in Horry County.

The actual vote..
FOR: Allen, Foxworth, Frasier, Grabowski, Hardee, and Prince.
AGAINST: Barnard. Gilland, Ryan, Schwartzkopf, and Worley. Please remember to thank them.
(Council email address: countycouncil@horrycounty.org.)

With each vote on Carolina Station we made progress…
Although disappointed, we were not surprised by the outcome last night. Let’s be sure and acknowledge the progress we’re making.

1st reading 5/13 was approved by a vote of 8-3.
2nd reading 6/17 was approved by a vote of 6-4.
3rd reading last night was approved by a vote of 6-5.

12/2/07 LETTER ON ASPHALT AND CONCRETE FACILITIES

Monday, December 3rd, 2007

Ms. Janet L. Carter, Head
Horry County Planning Department

Dear Ms. Carter:

On behalf of Horry County Pride I am writing to express total opposition on the part of our members to the placement of asphalt and concrete facilities in residential areas due to serious public health concerns. Asphalt and concrete facilities belong in industrial parks, and we request that all permits to place such facilities in residential areas be denied.

Horry County Pride believes it is reckless and unconscionable, if not criminal, on the part of elected officials to knowingly place potentially hazardous materials and facilities in residential areas. Asphalt and concrete plants are regulated because they are air pollution sources. They emit significant levels of both particulate matter and gaseous volatile organic compounds (VOCs), some of which are suspected carcinogens and detrimental to human health. The SC DHEC is currently basing decisions on toxicity using decades-old information. Science has come along way since then.

STATEMENT OF DR. STUART SCHNUR
HORRY COUNTY PRIDE
BEFORE THE
HORRY COUNTY COUNCIL
November 27, 2007

Good evening. My name is Dr. Stuart Schnur. I reside in the Blackmoor community in the unincorporated segment of Murrells Inlet. Because of my experiences in my “previous life” – as a member of library boards and Master Planning committees, ad hoc governmental and legislative advisory committees, and my public life as a school district superintendent for 16 years – I have been following with great interest the unfolding story of the so-called “development” of Horry County.

10/23/07 STATEMENT ON ACCOUNTABILITY IN ECONOMIC LEADERSHIP

HORRY COUNTY PRIDE

STATEMENT OF JULIE HARBIN
before the
HORRY COUNTY COUNCIL
October 23, 2007

ACCOUNTABILITY IN ECONOMIC LEADERSHIP

Madam Chair, Distinguished Members of the Council:

We have a problem in HORRY COUNTY that is threatening the well-being of every citizen and every visitor. It’s a problem that everyone who lives here knows about. It’s a problem we are to a large degree ignoring because it’s so out of hand that many believe we can’t do anything about it.

The problem I’m talking about is UNBALANCED GROWTH. By this I mean the growth of new businesses and new communities is far out pacing the growth of the very INFRASTRUCTURE needed to support that growth. And this UNBALANCED GROWTH is now destroying some of the natural resources that make our area so attractive to development in the first place.

With all due respect to all parties involved, we cannot continue to ignore this problem. We cannot continue to allow the enormity of this problem to keep us from addressing it. We cannot continue to allow special interests to ignore the interests of the WHOLE.
